FWSP Job Application Instructions

The Federal Work Study Program

Not only does participation in the FWSP allow you to earn funds to offset your expenses while enrolled at Rutgers, but it is also an opportunity to gain valuable on-the-job experience. Whether you work in a job closely related to your major or not, you are sure to gain transferable skills that will be useful to you in any future career. Always treat your FWSP job as a real job with a great opportunity for professional growth, and of course the added bonus of making some much needed money!

Your FWSP award will appear under your financial aid awards, but it is NOT credited to your term bill. You will be compensated only for hours worked in your FWSP job and can earn up to the award amount listed in the financial aid student portal.

Additional Information

Unless there are extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from successfully fulfilling the responsibilities of your job, the job placement you receive is the job you are expected to work in for the academic year.  Please keep in mind that if you are not placed in a department that you requested or in a job title that you feel you would most prefer, it does not mean that you will not be successful in your job.  Take the time to talk to your assigned supervisor to learn about the details of the job. You might be surprised at how much you end up enjoying your job– many jobs are different than you would think just from looking at the job title or name of the department.

Continuing students will receive an email each spring regarding their job placement for the upcoming academic year (assuming they remain eligible).  Students can either stay in the same job or indicate that they would not like to return.  Students who do not wish to return will be able to complete a new job application upon receiving their financial aid package for the upcoming academic year.

Select opportunities to work for non-profit agencies are available through the FWSP Off-Campus Community Service Program. Students who are interested in exploring these opportunities and are able to travel to off-campus locations can view a list of paid community service jobs.

If you are not eligible for the FWSP, you will not be authorized to complete the job application. However, you can search for non-FWSP job openings through the Rutgers Handshake.

Staff members on each campus are here to support you in your participation in the FWSP.  Don’t hesitate to reach out to your regional One Stop Student Services Center for assistance! If you are a Rutgers Health student, please contact your campus Financial Aid Office for further assistance.
