Loan Information for Rutgers Health Students

Health Professions Student Loan (HPSL)

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services Title VII Program, the HPSL is available to Rutgers School of Dental Medicine students only who demonstrate financial need as defined by the federal government. Interest is subsidized and fixed at 5%, and parental income information is required. Entrance and exit counseling interviews are also required.

Loan for Disadvantaged Students (LDS)

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services Title VII Program, the LDS is available to medical and dental students from disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate “exceptional financial” need as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services. Interest is subsidized and is fixed at 5%, and parental income information is required.

Nursing Student Loan (NSL)

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services Title VII Program, the NSL is available to nursing students who demonstrate financial need as defined by the federal government. Interest is subsidized and fixed at 5%, and parental income information is required.

Primary Care Loan (PCL)

As part of the Department of Health and Human Services Title VII Program, the PCL is available to medical students who demonstrate financial need as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services. Interest is subsidized and fixed at 5%, and entrance and exit counseling are required. A Primary Health Care Residency is also required, and practice in Primary Health Care is mandatory until the date of full repayment.

Students awarded the Primary Care Loan (PCL) are required to match into an approved Primary Care specialty to maintain eligibility for these funds. If a student does not match into a Primary Care field, the student becomes ineligible for the PCL. In such cases, the PCL funds must be returned, which may result in an outstanding balance on the student account.

If limited Loan for Disadvantaged Students (LDS) funding is available at that time, the student may be considered for LDS to help offset the returned PCL amount. Please note that LDS loan funding is not guaranteed and is limited.

Students are strongly encouraged to review the PCL program requirements and contact the Rutgers Office of Financial Aid with any questions regarding eligibility or loan obligations.
